Meet James & Victoria- They drove from out of town for their engagement session a few weeks ago...and this poor couple had THE coldest day of the year. We seriously couldnt feel out fingers when we were finished. I think the temp was in the 40's..and the winds were 25-30mph. Horrible conditions for any kind of photo session.

Despite the conditions, they made the best of it and it was definitely memorable. None of us had been to the OKC Farmers Market, but it was suggested as a unique place by their wedding coordinator, Allyson Vinzant (who is awesome by the way).

There was all kinds of unique things we found..including this cool blue couch thing...I really have no idea what the heck this was originally used for...

Congrats James & Victoria! Can't wait til your wedding next year!

Shawn & Sarah- Newly Engaged!

When I say newly engaged...I mean newly engaged. Only a few days after he popped the question, they called to schedule their engagement session! Why so soon? Well, Shawn is home for only a couple weeks- he's a civilian who's been working overseas for a year now!

This was such a fun couple! We walked around Bricktown for their engagement session, and when it got dark we headed to the outdoor ice rink to wrap up the session! It was hard choosing my favorites because they all turned out so great! Congrats Shawn & Sarah!

Soldier Send-Off

Kami and her family are sending off their soldier again. This is the second time this year he's been deployed. We took these photos at Will Rogers Park, and my favorite park of the whole session was toward the end when her son was chatting with me and said, "Heather...you're good at this! You should really think about becoming a photographer." hahaha. Gotta love kids :)

Christmas Session- The Holasek Family

I love this family. I've known Jen for a few years now, and she's as good as it gets! This family braved the freezing cold weather last week (I think it was in the 40's that day) for their Christmas session. Even when it's bitter cold and there's barely any leaves left on the trees, sessions in the winter seasons turn out great. Can't even tell their cold, huh? Beautiful family :)

Well, Thanksgiving is now over (in 48 minutes), which means its OFFICIALLY the best shopping day of the year! Back in my prime, I was one of the hundreds of people waiting in line to get through the JC Penny doors to get a free Christmas ornament. I was dang proud of those bulbs, too. Went perfect on my Charlie Brown Christmas tree that my husband (back then boyfriend) chopped down for me.

Nowdays, there's no way im dragging my kids out early in the morning to wait 2 hours in a checkout line. 12 minutes in the Walmart checkout line for groceries is the limit. So, I've accepted it...I'm stuck shopping online for the sales (which is fine by me).

Anyway, back on topic. Ok, back off topic for one more second. Does anyone else have their Christmas lights on and their stockings hung? Did it. With my fire going and my apple cider in the other hand. Yeah boy you better believe it.

P.A.L shows support for holidays

A few days ago, I loaded up my cargo (my camera and two year old son, Hank) and headed to Walmart. Not to shop, but specifically to photograph metro police officers volunteering for Oklahoma's needy families.

The Oklahoma City Police Athletic League (PAL) is a juvenile crime prevention program that provides educational and sporting programs for all children, primarily those in high-risk neighborhoods.

This year the organization was contacted by several grandparents who are physically or financially unable to purchase Christmas gifts for their grandchildren this year. Dozens of police officers swarmed the store to shop for gifts the grandparents listed on their applications. With their help, 256 children will receive Christmas gifts from their grandparents this year.

Now..you have to admit...that if you just happened to be

shopping at this Walmart that day...you'd wonder what in the world

was going on. I was actually in the customer service line when a grumpy

old man looked at the officer in front of me and said, "So...is it cop

shopping day or something?"

The officer said, "We're shopping for kids today." and the old

man said, "Hmm...Well...I guess cops have kids they gotta shop for too."

I was really trying not to laugh at that comment, but I think he felt

kinda bad when the officer told him they were shopping for needy families.

there's only one thing he loves more than candy...and that's cops!

Only natural, of course, since Daddy is an officer as well.

The last few moments

What will you be doing in exactly one year? I don't really expect anyone to think deeply into that question because it's a loaded question. However, when I remind myself how long a year is, it humbles me and makes me grateful for our service members.

Jeff leaves for his one year deployment TOMORROW. Jeff called earlier this week to have he and his girlfriend's OpLove session photographed. What Elisabeth didnt know is that he was planning on proposing during the session!

During the shoot, I made small talk about their relationship, trying not to blow the cover, until Elisabeth showed me her ring and said he had proposed the night before! Jeff decided to propose in a more meaningful location- at the OU campus.

They were such a fun couple, and chose the Paseo District downtown for their session location. Jeff & Elisabeth: Congratulations on your engagement and hope you have a safe and FAST deployment!

I love the fall colors! We have a few good weeks in Oklahoma during fall when the weather is nice enough for portraits and the colors have brightened. I photograph at Will Rogers Park at least once or twice a week, sometimes more. Every time I am there, it looks different because the park has so much foliage it's constantly changing colors.

I photographed Matt, Jessica, and their daughter, Riley earlier this week. I had a "Holy Cow" moment when she told me these were their FIRST family portraits EVER! I'm sure their family will be overjoyed when they get some of these photos in the mail!

Sweet Celebrations: An Op-Love shoot

Since the last big deployment homecoming a couple months ago, soldiers and their families have been waiting patiently for their turn at Op-Love sessions. With only one other photographer in Oklahoma volunteering for the program, you can imagine how jam packed the sessions have been the past two months!

In this program, photographers across the United States volunteer their services and provide free portrait sessions for deployed soldiers and their families. They have their choice of portraits before the soldier leaves, during the deployment and sent as a gift to the soldier, or portraits after the soldier returns home.

Scott and Amy had their Op-Love session a couple weeks ago (or maybe a week ago....what day is today anyway??). The leaves and trees are beginning to change color, and really make the backgrounds pop! Thank you for your service Scott, and thank you for your support Amy!

Garrett & Staci ~ Newlyweds

Last month I photographed Garrett & Staci's wedding at the beautiful Castle Falls in Oklahoma City. The weather was perfect for an outdoor wedding!

Can't forget the details...

As a couple, they opted out of the traditional schedule of not seeing each other before the wedding. Photographers often call this the "first look" photos. It allows us to get great photos of them as a couple before the ceremony starts, without of the fear of running behind schedule or feeling rushed to get to the reception after the ceremony.

From Louisiana to Oklahoma

My sister and brother-in-law came from Louisiana to visit this week. They don't get the fall weather in Louisiana. For those who have never been there, it's sweaty there most of the year and they have the weirdest and biggest bugs I've ever seen. The first time I went there a Rhinoceros Beetle walked past my foot like it was no big deal. Remember on the Lion King when Simba eats that Rhinoceros Beetle? Apparently they really do exist.

Anyway, back on topic here: We took these photos at the old bridge at Lake Overholser. This rusty old bridge makes an awesome background. We also took a few at the changing trees nearby. After being here a week, these folks are Louisiana bound later today.

P.S. How cute is my 1 year old niece, Lilah? Love it.

Jason, Sarah, and little Charelsie chose the Paseo Art District for their session location last week. There's such unique colors & textures in that area- it was a nice change! Didnt take long for us to find out that it's completely vacant there on Sundays! Vacant= no people & cars= less photoshopping! yay. Plus, how cute is this little girl? Love it.

Operation Love-Reunited

I love military homecomings. I just cant quit smiling when I'm in that environment: hands shaking from being so anxious to see their soldier, kids holding up home-made signs, and watching the wives fix their hair endlessly :)

The second batch of the 963rd stationed at Tinker arrived home yesterday. It's so neat...the plane actually lands and parks a few hundred feet from where the family members are standing.

Trash The Dress! (Let's don't and say we did!)

I looooove Trash the Dress sessions! For those who are wondering what in the world a "Trash the Dress" session is, they are the MOST fun, awesome sessions ever! These are basically very artistic bridal/post wedding sessions. They are scheduled on a date after the wedding date, and it can be of both the bride and groom or solely the bride. Now, I know the word "trash" is a very scary word in the same sentence as your wedding dress, but trust me...these are sooo much better than regular bridal portraits!

You have complete control over the session...you can get as dirty or wet as you want...or you stay perfectly spic and span for these photos. Because it's photographed after your wedding, there's no stress of getting a little dirt or dust bunnies on your dress, and were not on a time crunch as if before the wedding date. Trash the dress sessions can be taken in so many places! Railroad tracks, ponds, riding a horse, lying on hay bales, etc. Creative & artistic.

Christian & Jessica were married a couple months ago and wanted to preserve her dress (its the most gorgeous dress ever!). They chose the Oklahoma City Art Museum, and the possibilities were endless in there! There are quite a few restrictions with this locations, but it's totally worth it! Love these.

The countdown started months ago. The day these soldiers left, their wives, children, and families began counting down the days til their return. That moment happened a few days ago, when the 963rd arrived back to Tinker after their four month deployment to the United Arab Emirates.

Dozens of spouses and children waited anxiously on the flight line for one special plane that was due to land any minute. Once the plane was spotted it became real for them. As the plane pulled closer, I felt like my dog pacing back and forth trying to figure out what to do at that moment. It was so emotional, and I wasn't even involved!

Kids began jumping up and down, wives began shaking and tearing up, and when I looked closely through my lens, I could see soldiers pressing their facing against their windows trying to find their families in the crowd.

The cabin door opened and soldiers filed out one by one, each celebrating in their own way. Some had tears, some yelled happily, and the ground even got hugged a couple times. It was a frenzy trying to find their soldiers, so I just stood in place until they reunited. I wasnt about to get in the way of a military wife trying to hug their soldier after a deployment! ha.

Thank you to all our soldiers and their families!!

Loved this shoot! Found this awesome old barn in the middle of nowhere and it made such a cool background! Ashley and I met at this barn in Yukon and just walked around finding neat spots after we were finished with the barn scene. Country scenes are my favorite...a whole bunch of nothin makes a heck of a background.

Perfect Timing

Talk about perfect timing...Mike just returned from a six month tour in Afghanistan- racing against the clock to get home before his new baby is born! I'd say that's about as close as it gets...Amanda is due this week! Mike left for three months to train and then spent the next six months overseas. She found out the day after he left for training that she was pregnant! Luckily he's safely home now and gets to witness his baby girl being born.

Bitter Sweet...Memories.

Here's an upfront note before you read this: I'm not writing this as a photographer...I'm writing this as a mom.

Today was the big day...the day I never imagined would really get here. My 4 year old daughter, Maddie, went to Preschool today for the first time. I just can't believe it's been four years already...I still remember the many months hoping for a baby, the minutes right before I had her, and the first time she stood up by herself. One of the best things about having my own business is that I am able to stay home with my kids and arrange photography around our schedule. I've stayed home with them the entire four years, and I knew letting go would be hard.

Maddie's preschool class started today at 12:30pm. At 7:30 am this morning, I opened one eye ( you know how you can just feel someone staring at you??) and saw her standing next to my bed. There she stood...fully dressed in her new tutu dress, shoes on, and holding her crayon box.

"Mom, I'm all ready for school."

I bet those next five hours seemed like the world's longest wait for her. I had a lot on my morning list for her: breakfast to feed her new "school" brain, name tag, bath, make a preschool sign, and of course- the first day of school pictures.

By time I was ready to take her picture she was in the car, already buckled in. I promised to only take a few, but being a photographer's first born, I think she already knew it would be repetitive.

On the drive to school, I purposely reminded Maddie that when we got there, she always needs to give Mom and brother Hank a kiss goodbye.

At the Mustang preschool, parents aren't allowed to walk their children into the school. The school is set right off a busy highway, and it causes a huge traffic jam. There are only about 20 parking spots for the teachers, so there's not room for parents to park. A teacher or principal personally unloads every child from the car and walks them to their classroom.

For the traffic problem, they've come up with a pretty good solution for getting cars off the highway and onto the school property: cars form in two lines, go all the way around the back of the school, wind back up to the front, merge into one line, and do a figure 8 under the main entrance roof-finally reaching the unloading zone. Whew. Takes about 15 minutes, but I was enjoying every minute hearing Maddie get so excited to go on the monkey bars we passed, and tell me the exact order of playground equipment she would play on first.

My heart started to beat super fast when we finally reached the unloading zone. Maddie's principal opened the door, unbuckled her, and reached for her little hand. Hank and I waved goodbye. I yelled, "Bye Maddie May!" about five times...and finally the principal told her to tell me goodbye. I was holding up the line (yes...that was me waving out of my sunroof with both hands and sticking my long neck from side to side trying to see where she was going).

"Bye Mom!"

I honestly thought I would be able refrain from crying when I dropped her off at school. I almost made it. Until I saw her holding his hand, walking down the sidewalk, and looking around at all the kids entering the school. I just lost it....she looked so grown up. I really wanted to park the car and go run after her....especially after I realized she had forgotten to give me a kiss.

I had a flash forward...and saw her graduating someday, walking away across the stage like she was at that very moment. When I snapped out of it, I smiled because I knew how much fun she was going to have...she's gonna love school.

A few hours later ( 2 1/2 to be exact), I was back in that carpool line waiting to see my little girl. Didn't take me long to appreciate my super "swan" neck when I spotted her to the far right. Maddie jumped in her carseat, and assured her teacher that she could buckle her carseat by herself. Maddie started naming off all her new friends and explained to me that when the whistle blows, recess is over. So proud. I love this job.

And....Maddie took this photo of Hanky and me...pretty good huh! She's already informed me that she's not gonna be a photographer- she's gonna be a Barbie Musketeer and protect the royal family. Love it.

How sweet it is...

When I say I have the most thoughtful clients, I'm not exaggerating. Some of the most generous clients I've had are our military families. After nearly every session, I get two or three emails about how thankful they are for the Op-Love program and that they'll cherish their pre-deployment photos forever.

About five years ago, when my husband was in the military, we were stationed at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. The island consists of three people: Tourists, natives, and military. It only takes about an hour to drive the entire island from north to south, yet there are seven military bases. Talk about populated! Anyway, I remember one of my very firsts clients after graduating photography school was a family taking their last vacation together before their son left for Iraq. You could just see the anticipation in her eyes.

I received several emails throughout the year from the Treja family, thanking me for taking the photos and preserving their memories of that Hawaii vacation together. I had a sigh of relief when I received the final email letting me know he had safely returned over a year later.

To military families, the photos I take of them aren't just yearly family portraits. They know that they'll be staring at that photo every day until their soldier returns...some wife is sleeping with it in a frame so she can hold on to her husband...some little kid, who doesn't really understand why his dad is gone, says goodnight to it before he goes to bed. It's a reminder that someday their family will be together again, smiling like in the photos.

I photographed Travis & Emily's family for an Op-Love session a couple weeks ago and he is due to deploy in the next few days. I received this sweet card in the mail from her, thanking me for supporting the military families and giving them something to cherish while he's deployed. Another family that is added to my prayer list for the year :)

Pucker Up, Baby!

Good golly, I could take pictures of soldiers & their babies for hours. There's just something about how a baby looks at his daddy. Travis will be deploying overseas as an MP (military policeman) for approximately 8 months. It's bad when 8 months seems optimistic after photographing dozens of Army soldiers deploying for 15 months. Thank goodness Air Force has shorter deployments (doesn't make the deployment ANY easier, but at least the countdown is shorter).

From a distance...

Grizellie has her hands full taking care of her four children while her husband is fighting in the war overseas. Stationed in Italy, she and her family returned to Oklahoma for the summer to visit relatives in Tulsa. Grizellie won the award for furthest Op-Love travel! Ok...so she didn't really come all the way here for the Op-Love photos...but hey...I think it should count anyway because she still drove two hours from Tulsa to have these photos taken.

I'm calling it early....before they are stars. We may have future supermodels here folks. Get these kids in front of a camera and they transform! Automatically rotating and tilting every few shots, they quickly informed me they were hardcore fans of "America's Next Top Model."

Anyway, back to the Op-Love session! Check out this little doll they had made in the appearance of their dad! The little one would hardly let go of this pillow for the photos! What a perfect idea for families going through a deployment! Check this out: you upload your photo, the company forms the pillow to the photo shape, and a voice recorder is placed inside. Grizellie sent this doll to her husband overseas to record a message for their kids so they could hear his voice for the year that he is gone.

Wish I had one of these when my husband was deployed...I went through two bottles of his cologne over the 13 months he was gone. Yep...sprayed it on my pillow to smell him at night. I didn't care if I went to school the next morning smelling like a man. Best smell in the world.

Woo hoo! I've been so excited to post Christian & Jessica's wedding blog! Their beautiful wedding was held at the Oklahoma Heritage Museum June 18. I have photographed different wedding both inside and outside at this location, and it's one of the few places I prefer inside. The lighting during the ceremony inside is just awesome. I'm sure nobody else there noticed it except me. ha.

Jessica's dress tops my best for 2010 list...I'd totally wear this exact dress if I had a wedding dress re-do for myself.

I looooove this picture below. This is one of the moments I always rave about...the split second that is happens and you can see it in their eyes.

The Countdown- 2 days

I always tell military that no matter how busy I am, I will find a way to squeeze them in for an Op-Love session. That was exactly the case with Chad & Whitney...he's set to deploy in 2 days. This is one of many countdowns they'll go through..including the countdown til his leave and countdown til his return home. Alot of counting. Chad will be leaving his gorgeous wife, Whitney, and almost two year old daughter while he deploys for one year to Afghanistan.

The life of a 3-day old

If you have baby fever, you may want to skip this post! Looking at the sweet baby below will only make you want a baby more! Anyhoo, I photographed 3-day old Kynzlee a couple days ago, and she is so sweet! She slept for the first part of the session, but was wide awake when she figured out something was going on! She wanted to be awake for the action. She never cried once while I was there, she just held onto her hands and tried to figure out what in the world was going on. Everyone take a deep breath...and say Awwwwwww!

Family Ties

Geesh..I am running out of titles for these blogs! ha. Last week I photographed a super cute family! Ashley, Patrick, and little Benjamin were due for their family photos (isn't everyone? me too.) so we met at Will Rogers Park.

I know, I know...not the best part of the neighborhood, but my Uncle Tim has stocked me up with a lifetime supply of pepper spray so have no fear. (Plus, Patrick was there). Not a place I go often to take photos unless a male is there.

If some of you are wondering why no sessions have been posted about the botanical gardens lately, its because they've hindered photographers until summer of 2011 by completely shutting down the area. (I found that out the hard way when my clients and I showed up for a session there and got booted out of there in about 25 seconds.

Anyway, enough rambling. How cute is this kid? Benjamin was loving the camera and in such a good mood the entire time! Such a great family..I love watching families through my camera while they interact with each other. Love it love it.

A couple days ago I photographed a family preparing for their father's deployment to Afghanistan. John will be leaving in two weeks for his year long tour overseas. This Op-Love session featured poses for everyone...pics of all three kids for John to have overseas, John & his kids together, pics of John by himself for the kids to have, and also one big group shot of the family with significant others added.

Very soon, John will be headed for his training, return home for four days, and then leave for his Afghanistan duty. Please add the family to your prayers while he is deployed! Thank you for your service John!

We had time to sneak in a few clothing changes for Molly, which adds a lot of variety. I don't know why I've never thought of this before, but Amber brought Molly's swimsuit, which is such a great idea! Such cute photos!

Cash is a super cute one year old that is crazy about his cowboy hat! He loves that thing! When his mother, Shelby, talked to me about taking Cash's one-year photos, she knew exactly what she wanted: no posed shots. She wanted me to capture him being a kid- playing, running, and having a good 'ole time. I love it when parents want these candid portraits of their kids...it really brings out their personality where you can remember it forever.

The Grand Finale: Josh & Sarah's Wedding

In the past year, I've taken Josh & Sarah's engagement photos and their "First Look" photos, and finally got to shoot their wedding! I seriously loved this couple...they were so fun and really up for anything I threw at them.

I keep telling myself, "Ok...I'm not going to get emotional in this ceremony." But I always do! I am very blessed actually LOVE my job. People always ask me, "A wedding photographer...I bet thats a stressful job...do you ever get Bridezillas?"
Well, yes...every once in a while I do, but for the most part, I get to experience weddings like Josh & Sarah's...two people that look at each other and all you can see is the love between them. I get to be a part of the happiest day of my clients' lives, and I love it.

After nearly every wedding I shoot, I turn to my assistant and say, "This is what it's all about." I hear vows, and remember what they mean, and exactly what I was feeling when my husband and I were saying the same thing. Love it.

Anyway, let the party begin! Josh & Sarah are a pair of Oklahoma's finest! From the countryside engagement setting, to the barn "First Look" location, to the smoked hog at their reception. haha. Everyone was having a blast!

Finally, how awesome is this shot? Such a perfect couple! Congrats Josh & Sarah!

Operation Love-Reunited (the next surge)

Well, it's that time again! New military units have deployed, and soon other units will be returning home. I can always tell when the exchange is going on because I get about 15 calls per week for Op-Love! Amber's husband is serving overseas and will return in September. She and her three year old daughter are planning on sending these Op-Love photos to him as a surprise.

There are now only two photographers in Oklahoma that participate in this great program: Operation Love Reunited. This is in support of our soldiers and their families during their overseas deployment. Once deployment orders are received, the family is eligible for portraits free of charge. These portraits can be taken before the soldier leaves, during the deployment and mailed as a surprise to the soldier, after the soldier returns, or coverage at the homecoming ceremony.

No matter how many of these sessions I photograph, it never gets old or boring. I'm very honored to be a part of this organization, and it takes me back to a time when I was experiencing the same deployment as the families. Always reminds me how thankful I am for the soldiers and their families.

I spent this week in Minneapolis at a photography workshop being taught by 35 of the world's top photographers! I spent most of my time shooting fashion/models, and met some great new friends that I'm sure I'll see again at other photography get-togethers. We also met a band and photographed them before they left for their big radio interview in the city. Love these!

You'll never wear it again, might as well have some fun with it! Besides, you can always get it cleaned. "Trash the Dress" is the newest trend for brides. Unlike traditional bridal portraits, these sessions take place after the wedding date and are more artistic and creative. They are very modern, and there are tons of options- including dirt, railroad tracks, and even getting a little wet in a pond or swimming pool. The term "Trash" is an exaggerated term- you never really get your dress trashed (unless you want to) where it is ruined. At most, a little dirt, wrinkles, or wet is expected.

Jen has been married 9 months now, and decided on the TTD session. We met at the Paseo Art District downtown. This was a really fun, urban setting with lots of bright colors and funky textures on the architecture. How gorgeous is Jen? She could double as a model for sure. Here are some favs:

I first met Dan & Rachel a few years ago when I photographed their wedding in Broken Bow. A couple years later, I photographed their newborn twins, Macy & Kellen. Another year has passed, and last week I met with the whole family again at Hafer Park for some 1-year photos of the kids and also some updated family portraits. Hafer Park is such a great location for portraits. If you've never been there...it is huge and has every kind of setting you can think of: grass, trees, bridges, lake, playground, etc. Here are a few samples from their session:

Cali Bound

Meet Jeff and his soon-to-be Mrs. Stephanie. Steph & I first met over two years ago at a book study, and she has become such a good friend since then. Steph just happened to meet Mr. Right this year, and will be California bound in three weeks to begin her new life. Jeff is in the Navy and flew to Oklahoma for the weekend to visit (talk about a short trip!)

We squeezed in their engagement photos, and they turned out so great! Just watching the two of them together made me smile. Half of the time, they were in their own little world and I think they forgot I was taking photos. I still have no idea what they were laughing at the whole time!

She will be missed here in Oklahoma, but good things are to come!

It's Here! (Wedding Season)

Yay for weddings! Seeing all these new shiny rings reminds me that I need to clean mine. I remember when I was a newlywed and cleaned my ring every single day and told people "I will clean it every day for forever." Been married over seven years now...and have to admit, I need to clean it more! Anyway (I went way off topic with that one), last week I took a road trip to Enid, Pond Creek, and somewhere in the middle of nowhere outside of those towns for Josh & Sarah's "pre" wedding photos. These photos are often called "The First Look" session.

Instead of waiting til their wedding day, which is now only six days away, the couple gets all prettied up for their photos as a couple. These sessions are really unique because not many couples want to see each other before their big day. A perk of this session is getting to take plenty of artistic photos without being rushed and without 100 people staring at you on the wedding day. Usually, on the actual wedding day, photos are the last thing you want to do for an hour. But a few weeks before? Bring on the poses!

Here are some "First Look" photos when Josh saw Sarah for the first time:

Our first location was at Governor Springs Park in Enid. We took mostly traditional photos here and they turned out beautiful.

Next Sarah really wanted to focus on artistic photos at a their second location, a farm just outside of Pond Creek. This was the coolest place I've been to in a long time!! Never seen anything like it. Check out this round barn!

And, as always, you can't go wrong with sunset photos in the country.

Inside the barn was breath-taking. You can't help but to gasp when you see the architecture of it inside. These spiral stairs went from the basement that held tons of antique cars, to the second floor where I photographed them, and up to the ceiling of the barn.

A few days ago I met Chris, Chrishena, and their daughter Ally at the Botanical Gardens over the weekend. We planned this session last week, and I totally forgot how crowded the area would be on Saturday: Arts Festival, Thunder game that night, and Memorial Marathon the next day! Definitely got my exercise in- parked about a mile away because my normal parking spot was $25 due to the Thunder game! I couldnt help but wonder how many millions of dollars OKC was making that weekend from those three events!
Anyway, check out Ally's baby blue eyes! These are not enhanced by me...they are REALLY that blue! So cute!

A Run To Remember

15 Years ago this horrible tragedy occurred. I was in sixth grade at the time, and because I was so young, I didn't really grasp what had happened. I knew there had been a bombing, but I didnt understand the realization of it. As an adult, my eyes tear up just thinking about all the innocent people that suffered through that...and those who are still suffering.

I remember how scared I felt when I saw the terrorist attacks on tv in 2001. That must have been what everyone was experiencing in 1995 also...except I was too young to know that. The fact that it happened so close to home...so close that I felt our school desks shake...made it even scarier.

15 years later, Oklahoma has managed to create a touching and unforgettable experience with the memorial. The Memorial Marathon race has become known worldwide and named one of the world's "must do" races. This was my third year participating in it, and every year I experience an incredible appreciation for the families and volunteers that made this so successful over the years. There was never a dull moment in today's half marathon. Every inch of the way there were volunteers cheering us on, bands playing music in their front yards, and more "Thank You's" being said to me than I could count. Everyone participating in this race- whether being the runners or the volunteers- is grateful. Grateful for the donation, grateful for spreading the word, and grateful for remembering the tragic day.

I photographed these pictures yesterday at the memorial site.

Here are my unforgettable moments from today's race (happy, sad, funny, and inspiring):

10. Seeing a lady with two prosthetic legs using a cane to walk the race. As I walked behind her, I heard a lady say, "When my kids ask me why I'm running a half marathon, I say 'Because I can.' while watching the lady struggle to take slow steps. Just watching people at this race inspires you and makes you realize how blessed you are.

Another woman with one prosthetic leg was photographed pushing a wheelchair across the finish line.

9. Not being thirsty, but stopping at a water station solely because the 2 & 3 year old boys holding out water cups were too precious to say no to.

8. Belly dancers cheering us on at mile 8...and showing so much cleavage it was almost awkward looking at them.

7. My ipod biting the dust on mile 9 and seriously contemplating what to throw it at.

6. Laughing at all the hard-headed drivers that are waiting at the intersection for a gap to cross through. Meanwhile, a cop is yelling at the top of his lungs for them to turn around. Sorry people...22,000 runners....you'll be waiting there a while so take a detour.

5. Reading people's "In memory of" signs as they ran by me, again realizing how fortunate I am.

4. Being in shock after a 90 year old lady told me to "Move Over" so she could pass. Go ahead, you can laugh.

3. By mile 12, I was convinced there was no fresh air left to breath...it was all body odor from the men running in front of me.

2. Wishing my family were in the stands seeing me finish the race.

1. Holding back the tears crossing the finish line, knowing I accomplished my goal of running 13.1 miles.

Another race to remember, another year to remember.

Part of the Family

After a month of planning, Saturday's pet portraits were a success! Despite the pouring rain, EVERY person scheduled for the portraits attended! I was honestly expecting a couple withdrawals because of the weather. This was my first year holding this non-profit event, and I plan on continuing it because it was such a success! I shot in the rain for over four hours, and loved every minute of it because I could see the bond between the dogs & their owners. Most of them had never had professional photos taken of their dogs (it's a growing trend!), so it was really fun to capture the nature of these animals.

Instead of a session fee, participants brought a 30lb sack of dog food to be donated to Pets & People Humane Society in Yukon. Everyone had a blast, including the dogs. I heard some really inspiring stories, including how the Great Pyranese (the big white dog) was currently being housed by a friend while both his owners are deployed overseas. Is that great or what? I also found out nearly all of the participating dogs were rescued from a puppy mill or shelter. Thank you to all of those who are rescuing dogs!

Today was FINALLY the day for my free pet portraits to benefit Pets & People Humane Society in Yukon. I announced this event over a month ago so I was so excited for it to finally be here! Lets see....we've had about a month of gorgeous weather...and then today was pouring down rain! I was so glad I had no cancellations because of the weather. As my 4 year old daughter says, "It's just rain Mom, no biggie."
I LOVED the sessions today! Instead of a session fee, participants brought a 30lb sack of dog food to be donated to Pets & People. We brought in nearly 400lbs of dog food for them today! They were so very grateful for everyone's participation- especially since they rely 100% on donations for food.

I met Heidi and her three kids- Owen, Julianna, and Donovan last week for their family portraits at Veterans Memorial Park in Moore. This was my first time at this park, and it was really great-trees, creeks, playground, kids, and people walking their dogs around it. Although Heidi's husband was working and unable to attend, we were on a mission to get great family photos! They put on some good smiles for the camera- with a playground in the background all they had to do was smile for a few photos to and then they could be released to the playground area! Gotta love spring portraits.

Josh & Crystal: Newlyweds

Josh & Crystal were originally planning on having me photograph their engagement pictures, and have a 2011 wedding in Massachusetts. Plans changed when they were notified of his upcoming deployment. They had one week to plan their wedding! I was so happy I was able to photograph their wedding at an old church at Ft. Sill.
We started out with pre-wedding bridals at an old historical house in Lawton. It fit her vintage 40's theme perfectly! She looked classic, with her gorgeous red hair, light skin, and red lipstick! The wedding was short and sweet, and I could definitely see the love in their eyes. I love watching newlyweds look at each other when they think nobody is watching.

Hometown Hero

A couple days ago I met Chrichelle, KJ, and Daniel at Lake Hefner for their Op-Love session. Operation Love Reunited (www.oplove.org) is an organization run by photographers who volunteer their services for our deploying soldiers.

I am very honored to be a part of this organization. As a military wife from 2002-2006, I know exactly how much these families sacrifice during their time in the service. For the first two years of my marriage, my husband and I were only together 7 months out of the whole 24 months. Talk about a weird "newlywed" stage!

My husband was deployed to Iraq for 13 months, and I remember him telling me that the best part of his day, week, or month was when he received letters and photos from me. Sometimes those soldiers go months without getting mail, and the day they receive a special letter keeps them going until the next month- something new to smile at and remind them of back home.

After each Op-Love session, the photos are either mailed to the soldier overseas as a surprise, or are given to the spouse to send with a care package. Each family is allowed up to two sessions per year- one when they are deployed, and one when they return home.

As each day passes, don't forget we have thousands of soldiers over there...putting their lives on the line every day, and giving up their spouses and children to serve our country. Next time you see a soldier, thank them. Whether it's a hand shake or giving up your first class airline seat when you see him walk past you on the airplane- knowing he's probably either on his way home or on his way overseas.

For those of you who keep up with my blog, you are probably becoming familiar with the face below! In the last 6 months, Raegan has had her portraits taken by me 4 or 5 times. Newborn, 2 month, 4 month, Christmas, and 6 month. That's a lot of portraits! Most of you probably remember Raegan as the 10lb baby hehe. She's finally starting to grow into some of her baby chub and is rolling all over the place. She is one of the easiest babies to make laugh: noises, movements, you name it...she laughs! My how time flies when you're having fun.

Once a year, photographers all over the world flock to Vegas for the Wedding and Portrait Photographers International Convention (WPPI). These dates are the first that I book on my calendar, even before any weddings are scheduled! Here are some photos from the trip:

My husband, Shane, is always alongside anytime we are in a fun place! He went to Vegas for the same reason everyone was in Vegas (other than photographers). Bonus: He didn't lose money! ha.

Here are a few photos I took while site-seeing: shooting across the Bellagio fountains, from atop the Stratosphere tower, out the hotel window at a plane flying through awesome clouds.

I took a Masterclass taught by awesome photographer Kevin Jairaj, which was great! The model braved the cold outside until we moved into Kevin's hotel room to finish the lighting class.

Finally, the highlight of my trip was participating in a contest held by Kevin Jairaj and Alycia Alvarez. The scavenger hunt consisted of 13 to-do's, which included taking photos at specific locations on the strip and finding VERY hard to reach people in charge of the WPPI convention. Anyway, over $4,000 in photography equipment and prizes were given away to ONE winner, whoever completed the list and found Kevin or Alycia with pictures of each item. Guess who won? ME! Yee Haw!

Here are a few photos of the contest. The lady in the middle photo was THE hardest person in the world to find- the woman in charge of the whole WPPI convention. I searched for her 5 1/2 straight hours. When I say 5 1/2 hours, I don't mean I asked where she was and then came back later. I'm talking 5 1/2 hours of walking ONLY to find her in this huge hotel. By hour #3, the whole staff knew I was looking for her and had strict orders to let me know if they saw her! Finally, I got my final pic with her and was able to turn in my photos!

The bottom photo is of Kevin & Alycia, the two masterminds who held the contest with all the fab prizes I won!

Why does wedding photography cost so much?

This is a very good question, and being that wedding season is coming up, I'd love to explain it. Photography is an artistic, creative field. You can be a very good portrait photographer and have no experience in weddings. They are completely different. Portraits focus mostly on posing and take little time to edit. Weddings, however, are all about experience. That is what you are paying for....experience and trusting that the wedding photographer will know exactly how to shoot in EVERY condition- rain, shine, tornado, other flashes going off, rowdy crowds, spur of the moment decision making. Experience should be a large, if not the main, focus when choosing your wedding photographer.

Nowdays, with digital cameras, there are thousands of people claiming themselves to be professional photographers (Such as this lady in the video). A professional photographer is more than someone who has a camera (usually entry level). Megapixels mean squat to professionals. I could shoot a wedding with a 6 megapixel camera and blow a person flaunting a 14 megapixel camera out of the water. It's not about that. Remember that on your wedding day, there are no re-do's. One little thing goes wrong and your wedding photos are gone.

Ever heard "You get what you pay for?" or "Too good to be true"? You find a cheap wedding photographer, there is a reason why they are cheap. They are inexperienced, dont have proper camera equipment, dont have backup equipment, don't have multiple lenses, or may not have business insurance, etc. If you research the wedding photography market in your area and find a photographer who is incomparably cheap, beware.

Photographer's don't start out charging high- because, like I said before, they have little experience. Although I graduated photography school with 720 hours of pure photography, that didn't mean I was experienced in weddings. You work your way up as a wedding photographer- starting as an apprentice and second shooter for an established wedding photographer. My first wedding as the sole photographer I charged only $250 and was really happy with that. I also had NONE of the above mentioned items because I was inexperienced and had little money to start my business.

Watch this video below: notice the "wedding photographer" has no clue what her equipment even is. She can't answer a straight question when the judge asks her what Fstop she used, what her iso was, or why she didnt have necessary wedding photography lenses.

It's very sad that this poor bride was sucked into hiring this photographer. And ever worse that this happens every single day to people. I cannot tell you how many brides have come to me asking to reshoot their bride/groom photos and even reenact the wedding day. Here are some VITAL questions your wedding photographer should be able to answer. If they cant answer these, run the other direction.

1. Will he/she be taking the photos at your wedding?
If not, you should meet the person who will be and ask him/her these questions. Big chain photography companies are notorious for meeting with clients and not being the actual photographer that will be at their wedding.

2. How did you get your experience? School? Self-taught?
There are many self-taught photographers out there. It's important that they have actually apprenticed or attended numerous workshops and been in the field (not just read the info).

3. How many years have you considered yourself a professional?

4. How many weddings have you photographed outdoors?

5. How many wedding have you photographed indoors?
Indoor weddings are COMPLETELY different than outdoors. Lighting is very tricky indoors (especially churches when they don't allow flash.) If you're having an indoor wedding, It is extremely important that they are skilled on indoor weddings!

6. Do you have five referrals that I could contact?
I recommend no less than three. Call them and ask how long before their photos were delivered, about the photog's personality, photo quality of their wedding pics, and if they'd recommend them.

7. Do you have an assistant or second shooter at the wedding?
This is not necessary, it's more of a convenience thing for the photographer. Also, be aware that an assistant and second shooter are not the same. Assistants carry equipment around for the photographers- second shooters are photographers who's main objective is to get different angles and expressions than the primary photographer.

8. Are they a member of any professional organizations? Have they ever attended a workshop, class, seminar?
If so, they are most likely up to date with current trends and styles of photography. Members also have access to continuing education and other resources that non-members do not have.

9. What type of camera do you use--35mm, Medium Format (120mm) or Digital?

10. What lenses are you equipped with?
(Lenses are very important!) Should have at least 3- including a wide angle and telephoto lens.

11. Do you shoot RAW or JPEG?
Ask if they know the difference between them! In JPEG, parameters such as white balance, saturation, sharpness, and contrast are compressed and then stored, whereas RAW images are the actual file with no compression, thus allowing for more adjustments to the actual image instead of adjustments to the compressed JPEG image. Go Raw.

12. Do you have an external flash?
Must Must Must! Your photographer will be SOL at an indoor wedding without a flash. A flash is also needed in bright sun to prevent shadows under the eyes.

13.Do you have a backup camera, flashes, and lenses?
If they say no, run run run. Like I said before, there are no redos! This is your ONE wedding day! Your photographer should never depend on just one piece of equipment and should have a backup camera, flash, and lenses.

14. Is there a contract?
ALWAYS have a contract! This protects you!

15. Do you have liability insurance?
Any professional photographer should have this. It protects you, them, your wedding guests if damage occurs at your wedding. What if a kid trips over the tripod and busts the flash on the dance floor? If no insurance...you're probably paying for the repairs.

16. How long until the proofs are ready?
Average time is between 4-8 weeks. It's very important that this is state in the contract. I have known brides that haven't gotten their proofs back a year later! Readily discuss this at the meeting.

17. Guarentees: do they have one? Full or partial refund?
What is the policy if an emergency occurs? What if they don't show up or miss part of the wedding? Find out!

I hope this helps those brides that are wedding photographer shopping! It's a huge task in your wedding planning, and as you can see, you need to be aware of what to look for in a wedding photographer. Good luck brides!

Puppy Love

Yesterday I was so excited to take pictures of 15 precious puppies! These little rascals were 6 weeks old yesterday, and are Boxer/Cane Corso. By the end of the session, everyone was exhausted! The pups were passed out two seconds after we put them back in their beds together. So cute.

Operation Love-Reunited

Operation Love-Reunited is a great organization that I volunteer my services for. Most people have never heard of this program, but military bases all over the United States are becoming more aware of it as the deployments continue. This program helps out family members of deploying and deployed soldiers across the nation by photographers volunteering to provide complimentary portrait sessions.

To be eligible a soldier must have deployment orders, be currently deployed, or recently returned from a deployment. With only four photographers in Oklahoma that volunteer, I can tell exactly by the phone calls when a deployment is coming up or due to return home :)

A couple weeks ago Brandy had scheduled her family's OpLove session and it was cancelled due to the freezing weather. We met yesterday for their session, which probably would have been rescheduled again due to weather, but they are switching duty stations very soon. They decided to tough out the frigid weather (40 degrees before wind chill!) to have these taken because we weren't sure if there were volunteers in the area where they are being moved to.

These three little kids did such a great job in the cold weather! We knew it was time to call it a day when the kids couldn't even smile anymore. For more information on the Op-Love organization visit www.oplove.org.

The past few weeks, I've been rounding up all my wedding contracts for tax season. Then it hit me...all of these beautiful weddings...I need to have a "best of" tribute! Fab idea. Looking back at all these weddings brought mixed emotions. Lots of smiles, laughs, memories, and a little sadness because they're all in the past.

I had the best brides in 2009! They weren't just people to me. Many of these couples had their engagement portraits, bridals, family portraits, and even newborn photos taken by me. As of now, I know one bride that's a new momma, and two brides that are now expecting :) As for the rest of you brides, I expect announcements this year!

Is anyone else getting cabin fever from this snowstorm? I've been stuck inside for over three days now with a house full of people! My sister, her husband, and their 5 month old baby are visiting from Louisiana. So, what better way to take up time than to put the three kids together for some photos? These are some photos taken of my baby niece Lilah, my 2 year old son Hank, and my 4 year old daughter Maddie. They looooove eachother!

Thirty minutes later, the only kid left posing was Maddie May. All her real smiles were gone, so we decided to take some funny faces, complete with a feather on her head.

I have been anticipating this shoot for weeks now! My sister, her husband, and my NEW niece traveled here from Louisiana this week. We decided spur of the moment this morning to take some photos of Lilah by herself. You can definitely tell she is a first born...with all the frilly headbands, feathers, and tutu's that baby wears!
She just recently learned how to sit up, so it was a perfect opportunity. Every once in a while Lilah would get distracted by her tutu and do a nose dive haha. Of course, Mommy was right there to tilt her back up and straighten her bow...ha.

I was so excited for my kids to meet their new baby cousin. I was starting to wonder if my son, Hank, would think Lilah was part of the computer after seeing her on the webcam so often! Hank, pictured below, usually loves kissing babies...but he was not in a touchy mood today. He wanted nothing to do with Lilah in these pictures...no hugs or kisses for her! Have no fear...I WILL be getting the kissy pictures in a few days!

Owen & Sarah's Engagement Session

It is officially the new year! Owen & Sarah were my first engagement session of the year, which means wedding season is just around the corner! Yay for lovebirds. They live near Alva, and we decided to meet in Kingfisher for the engagement session. I LOVE doing sessions at unique places, especially small towns. A few days ago I was hired by TP Oil & Gas to take some cool photos of their drilling rig in Lacey, Oklahoma. Now, I don't know much of the oilfield lingo, but from what I was told, every well is named. This well was named the Debi Dawn#1, the queen bee wife of Tim, head of Ranger Oilfield Services. Love it. Anyway, this shoot was pretty fun! Lots of artistic things you can do with an oil well surrounding. If you've never heard of Lacey (which 99% of people havent), head toward Hennessey, and follow the pig-farm smell from there. Bahahaha!

I think I've officially finished my last Christmas portrait for the year. With only five days left before Christmas, I think it's safe to say everyone has their holiday cards sent out if they're planning on sending them! A few days ago I took these portraits of Jessica, her husband and son, her two brothers, and her nephew. We managed to get a few good pictures in each pose before the big meltdown finale with the babies. haha. How many minutes can you take family pictures with little kids in it before they get stir crazy? Not many! Gotta be snappy in situations like that! Bryan & Kendra- Newlyweds!

Bryan & Kendra were married October 24th, marking my last wedding of 2009. Usually, I post about 8-9 of my favorite wedding photos to post on my blog, but I decided to go all out this post and show a ton!

The girls opted to take group photos close to the church, which only seemed logical when you factor in the uncomfy high-heeled shoes, Oklahoma wind, and the chance that guests will see you and want to chat.

The guys, however, are always a different story. They get it easy....flat shoes, no hair to get messed up, and while the girls are usually quite emotional in their dressing rooms, the guys are usually sitting on couches watching tv and goofing off. ha.
The guys wanted to go off-location, a short walk to the Oklahoma City Bombing Memorial, for their group shots. This is the first time I have taken groomsmen shots there, and the people were staring at them like they were famous people. There were tourists lined up behind me taking their photos! Maybe it was their pink socks...

Kendra looked beautiful walking down the isle with her father.

Their reception was held at the Will Rogers Theatre. This was also my first time at this venue, and I loved it! The lights inside were great, able to change them any color they wished. There was also a huge stage for the dj and a large dance floor for the guests to boogie on. Loooved her flowers and cake!

I always love watching newlyweds dance. Nothing else matters besides their new spouse, which always reflects in the photos.

Christmas in the Crystal Bridge

Earlier this year I photographed Ryan & Natalie's wedding. It was one of my favorites this year! Last week I met with her family for their Christmas portraits. We were debating for days on a location. They liked the outdoors, but were really needing something indoors to keep Grandma out of the cold. We finally decided to play the weather by ear and shoot for the botanical gardens, with a backup plan of inside the Crystal Bridge if it was too chilly. If you've never been inside the Crystal Bridge downtown, it is really pretty! It was a perfect place for their family photos including Grandma. Love this family!

Sorry for the lack of blogging lately! I have been so busy catching up with Christmas portraits that I haven't had time to write much. Today is Thanksgiving, and after a busy day with family, there is now only 7 hours until my alarm will be waking me up for the best shopping day of the year! That's right...I'm one of the crazy people getting up at 4:30am to get the deals. I started participating in this tradition in high school, when I would stand in line at 4am waiting for JC Penneys to open so I could get the cheap Christmas ornament for being one the first 50 people inside. Of course, that was back in the day when I had two ornaments to go on my Christmas tree. Gotta start somewhere, right?

I am a little more sane now...there is nooooo way I would get my 3 and 1 year olds up at the crack of dawn for a bargain. When I see people in the mall at 5am pushing their kids in strollers I think they are crazy. I had to put off Black Friday shopping the last two years because of this. Luckily, this year my husband, who works the night shift, will be taking off a few hours early so I can be at the stores by 5am. yay! That's a bargain in itself...shopping with no kids!

Anyway, now that I've explained all the shopping details tomorrow, I want to write about something more serious. Every Thanksgiving, people think about what they are thankful for. I have been very blessed with a great family, a secure job, and a happy life. I know every person (including me) is struggling with something and needing prayer, but I rarely think about that in detail. I'm just not good with hearing depressing situations/illnesses, especially with children. This is the main reason I could never have a job like a doctor/nurse, police officer, child protective services, foster care, etc. I just feel so helpless when I think about people in situations they have no control over.

Last week, somebody on facebook posted a link about a child needing prayer. I clicked on the link, mainly out of curiosity, but then exited out after reading the first line. A child is ill. The next two days, I kept seeing others post this same link. I took this as a sign from God that I should read it. See what other people are experiencing, and be thankful for my blessings.

This daily journal is written by the mother of an 18 month old little boy named Brock who is critically ill in the hospital. I was very hesitant to read this journal in the first place because I have a son the exact same age, and it crushes me to imagine what he and his family are going through. Brock was taken to the doctor at the beginning of October with concerns about a lump on the back of his neck. The doctors figured it was a swollen lymph node and sent them home. A week later, they returned to the doctor because, in addition to the lump, Brock had developed a rash over his body, blood blisters in his mouth, and wasn't wanting to play at all.

After bloodwork, the doctor called them later that afternoon with results that are every parent's worst nightmare. Brock's platelets were extremely low (they were 3,000 and normal is 150,000-450,000) and he wanted to admit him to Children's Hospital to be seen by a hematologist. In as little as six weeks, Brock's world has been turned upside down. He was diagnosed with Leukemia and has now developed Aspergillus mold in this body. The doctor's made it very clear that his chance of surviving was extremely slim. These two can not be treated at the same time, or it would be fatal. If they decide to treat the mold, the cancer will spread throughout his body and kill him. If they treat the cancer, the mold will spread and kill him. Despite all of this, the family has kept hope, and fully believe in the power of prayer. Their only hope is a miracle from God, and they are praying several times a day for his cure.

I urge everyone reading this to follow the link below to the mother's journal. The journal, which starts on October 7th, is 24 pages long, and I promise no harm can come from reading it. It will inspire you, break you down, and let you realize what you have to be thankful for. Read it, grieve for them, and PRAY for a miracle.

Miss Morgy

Ok...so her name isnt morgy..it's Morgan, but I like calling her that. ha. Morgan is a 4th grader and had her fall portraits taken at the mini session I held last week. She was one big ball of energy! Which makes me think...when does that end? I remember being a kid and having the same spunk and urge to run every where I went. One day, you just notice you don't do that anymore. Ahh...to be a kid again.
Anyway, Morgan looks like a little model here! (Not sure if her mom will like seeing her baby girl looking grown up!) I did confirm that Morgan does NOT like boys yet. Give her a couple more years...

The Christmas Countdown

I met Stephanie & her son,Monroe, downtown a few days ago for their Christmas portraits. I think the botanical gardens are one of the most kid-friendly locations in the metro for portraits. There's plenty to look at, so when the kids start getting bored of taking posing, we just move to another spot. Some of the best shots are taken after switching locations when the parents are talking with their kids. Most of the time, they don't even know I am taking the photo. All the warm clothes and cold weather are making me realize winter will be here soon! Speaking of, I have been editing photos the last two hours while listening to a 24/7 Christmas music station online! Yay for Christmas! 37 more days....

And baby makes three.

Donnell and Ryan just welcomed their first baby into the family: Blair Tyler Smith. Blair was named after her mother's maiden name, and she weighed in at 6lbs 10 oz. Her session went great! She was awake for a few and then passed out with a full belly, making great photo-ops in the "frog pose". She was a cutie! Ryan had a great modern house, which also makes for great photo props! Congratulations Donnell & Ryan!

The Big Apple

Sooooo.....last weekend I took a little trip to New York with my mom and aunt. It was all of our first times, and to be honest, I think I was preparing for a little of everything- the good and the bad. We were scared to death it would be freezing cold and snowing, making it near impossible for us to sightsee like we wanted. I also figured we'd get mugged at least once on our trip. Hey..all I've seen is what's been in the movies. In the words of my dad, "Don't go on the subway or in alleys...haven't you seen the movie Ghost? Thats where Patrick Swayze was robbed and killed." Way to be positive, Dad. haha.
So anyway, we had a blast in New York (with my pepper spray handy)! Here's some of our pictures from the trip:

The close-up picture is the three of us in our first New York taxi ride. I highly recommend NOT doing this. Those taxi drivers are crazy. My hand was grasping the door so hard I could see my veins popping out. Speed limit 35...heck...lets go 55 and see how fast we can slam on the brakes two seconds later. Did I mention we were crossing the street when a taxi came out of nowhere and plowed an 80 year old man walking across from us? True story.

These next pictures are on our sight-seeing day. We walked to Central Park one day, paid $8 for a nasty hamburger that included meat only, and then decided to take a carriage ride around the park since neither my aunt or mom would rent a bicycle with me to ride around it. Now that woulda been a great picture.
Next photo of us is on the steps of the Cosby house (in the show). Saw lots of neat places and filming locations.

Finally, these last photos were my two most favorite activities. We went to the wax museum, which is like every other wax museum I have been to, but it became twice as fun because we accidentally went the WHOLE way through the Ripleys Believe it or Not before we realized we werent in the wax museum. Tickets said wax museum...we (including the gate people) never even realized we were in the wrong place til after we came to the exit and said "where's the wax people at?"

And for the grand finale, The Lion King! Now, I don't use this word often, but our front row seats to it were AMAZING! Definitely my favorite part of the entire trip. You really can't appreciate it, no matter how many times someone insists that it's awesome, until you've seen it in person. I would go back to New York solely to see this show again. AMAZING.

Great weekend! By the way...does anyone know where the term "The Big Apple" comes from? Apparently nobody in New York does. Asked about 50 people there and nobody had a clue. The End.

I loved taking photos of this family! From the minute they arrived, we were all having a blast at their session. The main mission was to focus on portraits of the three sisters, and throw in a few of the whole family. Even grandma was on location, but she was exploring the grounds and had no intention of joining in the photos! ha!
Brooke is due in a little over three weeks and the family is so excited to welcome the first grandchild into the family! Congratulations everyone!

I met with Megan and her family a few days ago at Martin Nature Park. We walked the trails and explored the area looking for great spots to shoot. There's all kinds of trails to follow. Megan didn't want the traditional posing that she's had in past years: she wanted me to capture pictures of the boys being themselves in the moment. These make for some really good pics and usually gets their real smiles instead of the "camera" smiles. The boys had a great time hunting around and playing in the leaves!
